Tchaikovsky: Symphony No. 1, 'Winter Daydreams' — Tilson Thomas and the Boston Symphony

Tchaikovsky: Symphony No. 1 in G minor, Op. 13, “Winter Reveries” — Michael Tilson Thomas, Boston Symphony Orchestra — An Absolute Reference Version

Recording Year: 1970 - Label: DG

This early 1970s recording is a landmark in Michael Tilson Thomas’s discography, made when he was still a young conductor beginning to establish his international reputation. At the time, he had already been appointed assistant conductor of the Boston Symphony Orchestra under William Steinberg.

Tilson Thomas brings to Tchaikovsky’s First Symphony a sense of freshness, warmth, and poetic phrasing, especially in the expansive slow movements. The Boston Symphony Orchestra, already known for its lush string sound and precision, responds with grace and vigor, aided by DG’s warm, analog acoustics of the time.
