Yakov Ivanovich Hubanov, a Ukrainian composer and musicologist born in Kiev in 1954, belongs to the generation of creators in Soviet Ukraine who combined university teaching with composition. His significance lies chiefly in his work at the Tchaikovsky Conservatory in Kiev, where he has spent much of his career.

He entered the composition class of the Tchaikovsky Conservatory in Kiev in 1970, under the direction of Shtogarenko. He continued his training at the Moscow Conservatory with A. I. Pirumov and, after completing his studies in 1976, returned to Kiev. There he first served as a postgraduate fellow in the department of music theory and later became a senior lecturer (1979) and then associate professor of higher rank (1984). He teaches composition, analysis, harmony, polyphony and orchestration, and has lectured on Denisov, Schnittke and Silvestrov. He is a member of the Union of Composers of Ukraine.

In his research, his thesis on architectonics in the compositions of Shostakovich stands out, alongside writings on the cluster as a harmonic phenomenon, jazz as a stylistic element in the music of Stravinsky, and dodecaphony versus diatonicism. As a composer he has employed a range of contemporary media and techniques, although one of the most distinctive features of his output is its eclecticism.
