Sheryngham
fl. c. 1500 · English composer
Sheryngham was an English composer active around 1500, about whom only scant biographical information survives. His name appears solely in connection with his works, which places him within the sphere of vocal music in Tudor England.
Two of his pieces are preserved in the Fayrfax Manuscript (GB-Lbl Add. 5465), an important collection of early Tudor partsongs: My wofull hart, for two voices, and A gentill Jhesu, for four. The verses of the latter are attributed to Lydgate, although in this version the poem has become a carol through the addition of a refrain, probably the work of Sheryngham himself.
Burney included a transcription of My wofull hart in his General History of Music, and both compositions were edited in Musica Britannica, xxxvi (1975).
