Nikolaus , Edler von Domanovecz Zmeskall
1759–1833 · Leštiny · Hungarian composer and amateur cellist
Nikolaus Zmeskall von Domanovecz was a Hungarian composer born in Leštiny, baptised on 20 November 1759, who spent much of his adult life in Vienna, where he died on 23 June 1833. His musical output was overshadowed by his relationships with the great musicians of his time.
He arrived in Vienna in 1784 as a secretary in the Hungarian Chancery, a post he held until 1825. Outside his official duties, he played the cello as an amateur and formed a close friendship with Beethoven, who dedicated his String Quartet op. 95 to him. The Duo in E major for viola and cello WoO 32 is apparently also likely to have been written for him, although this attribution is uncertain.
He composed sixteen string quartets and a number of other chamber works, which are preserved in the Gesellschaft der Musikfreunde in Vienna.
