Nicola Felice Tomeoni

d. 1830 · late 18th century · priest and italian chant master

Share:FacebookWhatsApp

Nicola Felice Tomeoni was a priest from Lucca associated with the cathedral of Lucca, though his family relationship to the composer Pellegrino Tomeoni is not entirely clear. From 17 April 1800 he served as cappellano benefiziato at the cathedral, a post he held until his death in Lucca on 17 July 1830, caused by a stroke.

He was known for his skill in plainchant and also turned to literature, publishing several short books. The surviving evidence thus places him as a figure in the ecclesiastical musical life of the city, rather than as a composer of renown.

It has further been suggested, though not yet confirmed, that there was a second son named Pellegrino, born in Lucca around 1759, who supposedly studied in Florence with Roberto (later Luigi) Braccini. No documentary evidence of his existence has been found.
