Juan Bautista Bruguera
fl. c. 1750 · Catalan composer
Juan Bautista Bruguera i Morreras was a Catalan composer who, according to the available sources, was active between 1750 and 1766, a period the bibliography places in Catalonia and in eighteenth-century Spain. He received his early training at the Escolania of the monastery of Montserrat, the traditional centre of musical education for boy choristers.
In 1750 he applied for the post of chapel master at Santa María del Pino in Barcelona, and in 1763 he did the same for the cathedral of Toledo. While serving as chapel master in Figueras in 1765, he received a prize medal from the London Catch Club for his canon Nine in One, set to Psalm 111, which was published in Warren's fourth collection of catches, canons and glees.
Around 1766 he published in Barcelona an apologetic letter in defence of the Labyrinto de labyrintos, written to support his brother Pedro, a harpist at the Descalzas Reales convent in Madrid, who had challenged Antonio Soler. The pamphlet is now cited chiefly for the autobiographical details on its sixth page. Fragments of his sacred music survive in manuscript in the Biblioteca de Catalunya.
