Józef Janiczek
1740–1806 · c 1740 · Polish organ builder
Józef Janiczek (c. 1740 – 1806) was a Polish organ builder from Kalisz, although his career unfolded mainly in Warsaw, the city where he settled and where his commemorative plaque records him as "organifex varsoviensis".
Janiczek built and repaired several instruments in Warsaw and its surroundings, including one in Łowicz in 1797. He travelled frequently throughout Poland and abroad, and among his cathedral commissions were the organs of Włocławek (1800–1801) and Breslau (now Wrocław, 1801). Some of his instruments, such as those at Koło (1783) and Borek (1799), near Poznań, survived into the twentieth century; the Borek organ was dismantled in 1948. These organs were reportedly well constructed and musically satisfying, which would explain his good reputation both among his compatriots and among the German organ builders of Silesia.
