Josef Malzat
1723–1760 · Pirnitz [now Brtnice] · Czech-Austrian composer and violinist
Josef Malzat was born in 1723 in Pirnitz, today Brtnice, and died in Vienna on 25 November 1760. He is regarded as a composer and violinist of mid-eighteenth-century Vienna.
According to the available information, he moved to Vienna around 1745, possibly in the service of Count Haugwitz. In 1747 he worked as musicus primarius at the Dominikanerkirche and, in 1757, as a musician at St Stephen's Cathedral. He is probably also the Malzat listed as a violinist in the orchestra of the Burgtheater, though this cannot be stated with certainty.
His output includes a partita, a symphony and a quartet, as well as a flute concerto and three symphonies, all recorded in the Breitkopf catalogues. His work is little known today, but it stands as a testimony to the musical life of Vienna in his time.
