John Coates
1865–1941 · Girlington · English tenor
John Coates (Girlington, Yorkshire, 1865 – Northwood, Middlesex, 1941) was one of the most distinguished British tenors of his generation. His career is particularly interesting because it began far from opera and oratorio: for years he sang as a baritone, and it was not until well into his maturity that he established himself in the tenor register.
Before devoting himself entirely to music, he worked in the business world. He sang as a baritone with the Carl Rosa company in Manchester and Liverpool and, in 1893, received lessons in London from William Shakespeare, who maintained that his voice was in fact a tenor. Even so, he appeared as a baritone at the Savoy Theatre in Sullivan's Utopia Limited, and accompanied the production on a tour of the United States. He then enjoyed a regular spell in musical comedy, both in London and in the provinces, and undertook a second American tour.
Having retired from the stage to study the tenor repertoire, his career took a decisive turn at the Worcester Three Choirs Festival in 1902, when, at the age of 37, he was presented as a tenor in the role of Gerontius in Elgar's work. From then on he was recognised as an interpreter of great command across a broad repertoire that included Siegfried, Tristan, Lohengrin, both in Germany and with the Beecham and Moody-Manners companies, Elgar's The Apostles and The Kingdom, and the traditional oratorios. In his recitals he took on lieder, French song and Elizabethan and Tudor music, and he also championed contemporary English song.
Contemporary accounts describe a voice of not especially opulent colour, but of remarkable expressive variety and great intensity directed at the listener. His musical intelligence and poetic imagination left a lasting mark, and his way of conceiving the piano part in lieder was so remarkable that those who accompanied him were deeply grateful. Coates is remembered as one of the most distinguished English tenors of the century.
