Johann Gottlieb Schneider was a German organist and composer born in Alt-Gersdorf in 1797 and died in Hirschberg in 1856. The brother of the composer Friedrich Schneider, he received his first musical training from their father, within the same family setting in which his elder brothers were also trained.

He studied at the Gymnasium in Zittau and then at the University of Leipzig. In 1815 he worked as a music teacher in Bautzen and, two years later, moved to Sorau to take up the post of municipal organist. From 1825 he lived in Hirschberg, where he gained a reputation as an excellent organist at the Kreuzkirche.

He composed a variety of pieces for organ and piano, works that reflect his work as a performer and church musician within the context of his time.
