fl. c. 1386 · Italian composer from fourteenth-century Florence

Jachopo Pianelaio de Firençe was an Italian composer born in Florence, documented from about 1386 to 1390. What is known of him depends largely on these records, which place him among the artisans: he worked as a maker of slippers, a trade he combined with composition.

He is thought to have belonged to the Compagnia dei Laudesi di San Zenobio in Florence, a lay confraternity devoted to singing laude, though this remains only a probable hypothesis. Of his output, a single simple ballata for two voices survives, Come tradir pensasti, preserved in a British Library manuscript and edited in the twentieth century. Its opening lines are quoted in documents from Bologna (1382) and, apparently, Udine (1331), although the Udine date is strikingly early and should be treated with caution. The melody of this ballata also served for a lauda, Come se' da laudar.
