Hans-Jürgen von Bose
b. 1953 · Munich · German composer
Hans-Jürgen von Bose (born Munich, 1953) is a German composer whose work, centred on opera and chamber music, sits at the crossroads between the modernist tradition and postmodernism. Trained at the Musikhochschule in Frankfurt, where he studied composition with Hans Ulrich Engelmann and piano with Klaus Billing, he took his first steps at the Darmstadt courses in 1974, the same year he signed a publishing contract with Schott in Mainz.
Two years later he abandoned his studies and settled in Munich as an independent composer. From these early years date the orchestral work Morphogenesis, premiered in 1976 by the South West German Radio Orchestra under Ernest Bour, and the one-act opera Das Diplom. Commissions followed from the Hamburg State Opera, for Blutbund (1974), and from the Berlin Festival, for String Quartet No. 2 (1976–77). The ballet Die Nacht aus Blei (1981), composed during his first stay at the Villa Massimo in Rome, brought him notable professional recognition. Shortly afterwards the Berlin Philharmonic commissioned Idyllen to mark its centenary, and the Ensemble Modern commissioned Sappho-Gesänge.
In the late 1980s he was composer in residence with the Sharoun Ensemble of Berlin, and his teaching gained in weight: first at summer courses such as those at Hitzacker and Weikersheim, and in 1992 as professor of composition at the Munich Musikhochschule. During these years musical theatre came to occupy a central place in his output and eventually influenced his instrumental music too, as shown by the Piano Concerto Salut für Billy Pilgrim, linked to the opera Schlachthof V, or String Quartet No. 4, which incorporates quotations from Franz Kafka.
His legacy revolves around an idea of musical structure that eschews conventional linearity and which, as he has himself developed it, draws on the study of astrophysics, neurobiology and chaos theory. His music combines the superimposition of tonal layers charged with meaning with microtonal material and electronic techniques, and his model of musical theatre rests on Mozart, Stravinsky and Richard Strauss. His work reflects an aspiration to reconcile structural complexity with direct sensory experience, which places him among the significant voices of German composition of the late twentieth century.
