fl. c. 1610 · Italian composer

Share:FacebookWhatsApp

Giulio Romano is an Italian composer about whom little biographical information survives; he was probably active at the beginning of the seventeenth century. His figure has been confused with that of other musicians with similar names, such as Alessandro Merlo (also called Alessandro Romano), Romano da Siena and Giulio Caccini.

It is known that he composed seven Concenti spirituali, published in Venice in 1612 for between one and six voices, a work now lost. The collection Fuggilotio musicale, published in Venice around 1612 or 1613, probably also belongs to him. For a long time it was attributed to Caccini, until 1972.

The Fuggilotio, dedicated to a Venetian nobleman, brings together 18 monodies and 14 duets. At least these monodies follow the model of Caccini's Le nuove musiche.
