Giovanni Francesco Milanta was born in Parma on 1 March 1607, into an influential family who lived near what is today the Oratorio di Santa Lucia in that city. The date of his death is not known with certainty; he is thought to have lived beyond 1651.

In 1651 he was working as organist and maestro di cappella in Asola, a fortified town in the Venetian domain close to Mantua. His printed output was published in Venice between 1649 and 1651: masses, psalms and motets with sinfonias, a second book of motets with litanies, and a first book of madrigals with canzonettas and sonnets of a representative character.

Milanta appears in the reference works as the author of salve settings and several litanies, although little is known about the course of his career.
