Georg Ludwig Agricola (Grossfurra, Thuringia, 1643 – Gotha, 1676) was a German composer and writer whose career belongs to Thuringia in the second half of the seventeenth century, a setting shaped by Lutheran tradition and the influence of Heinrich Schütz. His significance lies chiefly in his service at the ducal court of Gotha and in the character of his vocal music, which engages with the forms cultivated by the Saxon cantors.

His education was first at school and then at university. He studied in Eisenach, where he came into contact with the teacher Theodor Schuchardt, and between 1659 and 1662 he prepared for his final examination at the Gymnasium in Gotha, directed by Andreas Reyher, co-author of a pedagogical method that included musical instruction. He studied philosophy in Leipzig and later theology and philosophy in Wittenberg, where he took the degree of Master. Although he acquired his musical foundation at school, he may apparently have been a pupil of Sebastian Knüpfer, though this is not known with certainty. In Wittenberg he completed his training in composition with Italian musicians resident in the city.

On returning to Thuringia, he worked in the chapel of the court of Schwarzburg-Sondershausen. In 1670 Duke Ernst the Pious of Saxe-Gotha appointed him Kapellmeister of his court, succeeding W. C. Briegel, a post he held with distinction until his premature death at the age of thirty-two.

Very little of his output survives. Three volumes of the Musicalische Nebenstunden, containing sonatas, preludes and dances, have been lost, as has much of his printed work. A number of vocal works survive, among them motets and spiritual madrigals, which show the imprint of Schütz and of the tradition of the Saxon Kantors. His legacy is therefore more documentary than musical: it bears witness to the transmission of Lutheran cantata forms in central Germany.
