Edmund
fl. c. 1396 · English composer (of uncertain identification)
Edmund is known above all for a two-voice song, Thys yol the beste red, preserved in manuscript Add. 5943 at the University of Cambridge, where it is attributed to 'Quod Edmund'. The provenance and probable dating of the codex favour identifying him with the Edmund who served as informator choristarum at Winchester College between 1396 and 1397, although this cannot be confirmed directly.
Another Edmund appears in the fourteenth-century motet Sub Arturo plebs, which commemorates him as 'Edmundus de Buria', an excellent tenor and a favourite at court. He is recorded in the household of Edward III between 1359 and 1370, but it is probable that he is not the same composer.
His identity remains uncertain: the attribution of the song depends on inferences drawn from the manuscript, and the figure named in the motet cannot be securely identified with the author of the work.
