fl. c. 1598 · Italian composer

Share:FacebookWhatsApp

Antonio Tonello was an Italian composer about whom only scant information survives. He is documented around 1598, when he served as maestro di cappella at the cathedral of Feltre, connected with the musical life of the Veneto.

His best-known work is the collection Madrigali a cinque voci, published in Venice in 1598, although the imprint details of the edition are incomplete. Much of it is devoted to pastoral verse. One of his madrigals honours a local notable, Paolo Bellato, whose name appears in the text. The book seems intended for a gathering of amateur musicians from the area.

A four-voice version of Suggea da duo coralli also survives, in an anthology by Giovanni Maria Radino, an organist in Padua.
