Andrea Torresani
b. 1451 · Asola · Italian printer and publisher
Andrea Torresani was an Italian printer and publisher active in Venice from the late fifteenth century into the first decades of the sixteenth. He was born in Asola on 4 March 1451, although his professional activity is documented only between 1479 and 1529.
In his early years he worked chiefly as a printer. After 1495 he became fully associated with his son-in-law, Aldus Manutius, and shifted his focus from printing proper to publishing. In 1496 and 1497 he published two missals containing music, set in type for Roman chant.
Following Manutius's death in 1515, he took over the running of the Aldine press. In 1521, together with Andrea Antico, he edited sacred music, including masses and motets. His work is notable for having brought printed music publishing to a far wider circulation.
